Maintenance on your fleet can be key to profitability.  Preventive maintenance can head off costly repairs down the road.  Have a professional mechanic check the vehicle for possible problems on a weekly basis.  Also, key your driver in on this process too. 

Let your fleet vehicle driver know that his truck is his lifeline to success in the field.  If the driver is made to feel like he is part of the process he/she will be more likely to let you know when there is something different about a vehicle.  They drive it everyday. They know what it should run or drive like.

Preventive maintenance can be a key to a profitable on-call/mobile repair or service business.  Prevention of a weeks downtime to replace an engine or transmission can certainly save thousands on lost production and thousands of dollars in repair costs.

Maryland VEIP failure; customer brought this vehicle into the shop with check engine light on and VEIP failure slip.  In one hand the failure slip and the other a “universal” catalytic converter.

Code presented was a P0420.  Catalyst efficiency below threshold.  This doesn’t always mean the catalytic converter is bad, but chances are very likely for this.  We ran some O2 performance tests and checked the ability for the cats to retain O2 by introducing a vacuum leak and checking the gas levels with our 5 gas analyzer. 

Testing concludes that the cats have failed or another internal issue.  Advised customer of repair needs.

Removed existing cats to find that one of the catalytic converters (pre-cat), was empty….

Replaced all three converters, retest with 5 gas, PASS!

Autozone was kind enough to scan test this vehicle for the customer and hand them a narrow slip of paper with a code number printed on it.  Suggesting that she may need an EGR Valve….  Now our turn to run complete diagnostics on the system to confirm or deny their suggested course of repair action.

Stall without restart…. waiting for a technician and a bay.  We’ll update you later on the progress.
